Book Review: “The Word for World is Forest” by Ursula K. Le Guin

Book Summary

This was my first book by Ursula K. Le Guin. She is a very prominent science fiction writer who has written popular books such as the Earthsea series and The Left Hand of Darkness. She was always on my reading list, and I finally got a chance to read one of her books.

What attracted me to this book was the unique title: The Word for World Is Forest. This is a poignant title, which is, of course, a phrase from the book. This phrase is spoken by a humanoid species on another planet far from Earth, but in some ways, they are more humane than the actual humans in this story. The humans derogatorily call them “creechies,” a furry, green, little species populating the planet Athshe. Athshe is a world full of trees—a global forest. The Athsheans cohabit the forest and live in harmony with it. On the other hand, humans have come from Earth with the sole objective of clearing the forest and harvesting its lumber. Lumber is a precious resource in the future, as humans have consumed it all on their home world. The story revolves around the conflict over resources: the needs of the local people versus the wants of the outsiders.

Book Summary

Ever since the summer of 2010, I was interested in Systems Thinking. I got the first whiff of the subject in an eye-opener of a course by Prof. L. S. Ganesh. It has been so long that I do not remember the details of that course, but it instilled a curiosity that made me study more, read more, and experiment more. Book Name: A Canticle for Leibowitz

Book Summary

The book deals with a journey across time, where the only constants are the Church, war, paranoia, and the disastrous human tendency to make the same mistakes again and again. The book places its emphasis on the challenge of preserving knowledge, understanding it, and repeating the same cycles of history.

The scope of the book spans over a thousand years, where human civilization goes from a desolate, religiously oriented, post-nuclear apocalyptic world to a medieval one where tribalism dominates. The world slowly opens its eyes to new avenues of understanding its history from the point of view of science. The ending of the book culminates in a developed world where human civilization has progressed to achieve interstellar travel, yet is still as divided as ever. The book ends with the world wrecked, pushed into apocalypse yet again. How scores of humans navigate this world throughout the eons determines the flow of the story.

What is UV?

An fast python package manager and project manager (Written in Rust)
replaces pip, pyvenv, virtualenv etc.

Installation

UV can be installed using any one of the package managers (homebrew, pacman etc)

Commands

Initializing a project

uv init <project_name>

The above command creates a folder named <project_name>. Inside the project name there is a complete project directory including the virtual environment. UV expects you to follow this project structure.

Deciding what to build for phase 1

For the past few days, I’ve been feeling stuck. I thought I was on the brink of completing my app, but for some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. My progress was hindered by multiple factors:

Flutterflow includes three types of Nav-bar implementations: Flutter Default Nav Bar, Google Nav Bar and Floating Nav Bar. I had initially implemented Flutter Default Nav Bar, the problem with the implementation was that the Nav Bar throws an error if you need a Nav bar on the pages for easy navigation that are not present on the Nav Bar (for eg. I do not have the meditation timer page on the nav bar yet I want the Nav bar to be present on the page for easy user navigation).

Additional Information

Flutterflow team recently released some exceptional videos to help with the UI problems that I am currently facing. These problems include:

I am creating for one set screen and in reality the app will be used in multiple devices of varied sizes. A common guide for getting a size reference is available on android developer guide.

Even though the size that I have chosen makes sense, still due to faulty layout configuration negative spaces/gaps will get affected if the screen size deviates from the standard one.

Feature design notes
- Option 1: Create a new component. Create 5 containers with different emoji faces. These different faces also have their corresponding color variants. The color switching will happen with the help of a radio button. When the radio button is clicked, the conditional display of emoji buttons will be triggered, displaying only the selected option. The problem with this implementation is how to control when two or more emojis are clicked one after another. There are no hooks that enable me to link these separate bits.

I am stickler for reading writing books written by the writers themselves. I have read three of them, On writing by Stephen King, Writing Badly is Easy By Amitava Kumar and Novalist as a Vocation by Haruki Murakami, along with the description of a writer’s day and other related stuff in the books and blogs by Tim Ferris.It’s fascinating to hear writers talk about the gruesome writing rituals they follow, the ways in which they developed their writing skills, and how they overcame numerous hardships to become masters of their craft. Perhaps what resonates with me most is the realization that these superhumans are also mortal, facing the same challenges and struggles that we as humans encounter.

Option 1: Create a local app state, store the value of the widget state in that app state. Use the app state in the meditation section
Option 2: Create a page parameter, Pass the widget state in the page parameter and use the page parameter in the meditation session

So far, having tried both of these methods, I am not able to get the looping music to work. In both of the above options, the app was not compiling at all.

Objective of the App

Time for a short story

About 1 month back, I got the idea of creating an application that helps in conducting an effective meditation practice. The problem that I was trying to solve was that sometimes after a meditation session my mind was on overdrive and I felt overwhelmed by my thoughts. To channel and understand my thoughts I started the practice of writing a journal. I would use pen and paper to do journaling and the practice helped me to calm down and structure my thoughts. Often I would set a meditation timer on my phone and then I would scramble for the pen and paper after the meditation session.

Simplistically, This book talks about the journey of an old man in the sea and his efforts to catch a fish. On a deeper level, The book is an allegory of what it means to pursue something. The sea is the vast expense of the world, where one should not venture too far. The huge, deep part of the sea is unpredictable with all manner of dangers like Sharks and unstable sea.

I am Kaushal Bundel. I live in Jaipur, Rajasthan (India) with loving, caring parents, a wonderful wife and super energetic daughter. My story started with loving Comics, Books and Computers. Though Computers were a treat to play with, I detested programming and related works. I enjoyed creating small games, running “Kid’s” Olympics with me and my 3 other friends and creating short stories.

I did my engineering staying as far as Computers as I can. I even did MBA from DoMS, IIT Madras just to stay far away from all computer related work that was the compulsion of fresh graduates in India. My first job was with Daimler India Commercial Vehicles as a Purchase Manager. This was my first job, I made a lot of mistakes, learned a lot and tried to figure out what do I really want from the life. I understood a could of things, I loved creating and being a part of something meaningful and I loved playing with Computers.
